Early Life and Career Beginnings
Mike Nichols was born on November 6, 1931, in Berlin, Germany, to a Russian-Jewish physician.
In 1939, his family fled Nazi Germany and settled in the United States. After his father's death, the family faced financial hardship, and young Mike worked as a night watchman, mail clerk, and truck driver to support his education.
Nichols studied at the Actors Studio in New York City and founded an improvisational theater troupe in Chicago.
He began his career as a comedian and singer, performing in restaurants and cabarets.
Broadway and Film Debut
In 1963, Nichols made his Broadway debut as a director, and in 1966, he released his first film, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?".
