Growing up unusual
As memoirs go, Carmit Delman's represents a very tiny slice of the American experience.
Her father is an American Jew of Eastern European descent. Her mother is a descendant of the Bene Israel, a tiny community of Jews in Western India.
Delman grew up in Ohio, Israel and New York City.
Delman juxtaposes her life experience against that of her maternal grandmother, Nana-bai, who became second wife to her brother-in-law in an arranged marriage in 1932, in "Burnt Bread and Chutney: Growing Up Between Cultures -- A Memoir of an Indian Jewish Girl" (Ballantine Books, $22.95).
Despite the narrowness of the slice of American experience Delman's life represents, she sees her story as universal.
"It's a story about growing up.
It's about the trials of families, the good and the bad, and just accepting your family for what it is, good and bad," said Delman in a telephone interview from Tennessee, where she is on a mostly self-funded tour in support of the book.
