The Weather Channel meteorologist returns to Texas roots for new job

SAN ANGELO — When Dr. Steve Lyons decided to leave The Weather Channel after 12 seasons as its severe weather and hurricane expert, he wanted to return to his roots — weather forecasting.
“I’m a scientist and a public servant at heart,” he said.

“I wanted to do public service that can save people’s lives.
“I wanted to be in a forecast office.”
Steve, who was recently named meteorologist-in-charge of the National Weather Service’s forecast office in San Angelo, said he knew exactly where he wanted to go: Texas.
“It’s my favorite state,” he said.
“I love the wild weather.”
Plus, his wife’s from Dalhart and has many family members in Texas. His own parents and sister live in the state. And Steve lived and worked in Texas earlier in his career.
But why San Angelo?
“I asked myself, ‘Where does the wildest weather occur?’”
The answer?
“Amarillo or San Angelo.”
